September’s come and gone; fashion month is up, New York restaurants are again flowing with clientele finally back from their summer in the Hamptons, and most importantly, the Scandal 33-day countdown is coming to a close (the show premieres this Thursday). For those of you who are unfamiliar – and we’re semi-judging you if you are – Scandal is the hit ABC show, starring Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn, that everyone’s been talking about. Naturally, we decided to hit up most of the cast and crew for all their food and lifestyle tidbits.

We decided to start our series this week the way the Scandal series began…with Katie Lowes. Lowes’ plays the practically irresistible “gladiator” Quinn, and was last seen taking a power drill to a gentleman’s leg (in all fairness, he had some very valuable information). For today though, she posed for us at the restaurant she used to waitress at – AMMO – where the food is as unbelievable as the clientele. Talk about a full circle moment. We had some wine, took a turn around her old stomping ground, and made sure to keep the toolbox out of sight…

From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?

Movie popcorn all day LONG. I don’t think I could ever get sick of it.

What’s your drink?

Tequila! I love a nice patron with soda water and lots of limes. But if we are talking non-alcoholic then coconut water.

What would your last meal be? Who would it be with?

My last meal would definitely be a bowl of delicious homemade pasta with simple olive oil and garlic with my hubby, to remind me of our honeymoon in Italy!

How do you start your day on a good note?

I love starting my day off with some steel-cut oatmeal with berries, cinnamon and a splash of almond milk.

What are your favorite places to travel to?

My husband and I have been fortunate enough to take some really cool, memorable trips lately. Out of all of them, Peru definitely takes the cake. The food, the people, the history and those Pisco Sours…I hope to go back someday soon!

What won’t you travel without?

An itinerary.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

My girlfriends. I am very lucky to have a group of gals out here in LA that I’ve been close with for twelve years. We started a theatre company together called Iama Theatre Company. Simply put, they are just the coolest and inspire me all the time.

What ingredient do you consider overrated?

None! I’m somewhat of a foodie since working in a bunch of farm-to-table restaurants in LA and I feel that every ingredient has its purpose.

What ingredient are you convinced makes everything better?

Maldon Sea Salt. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

Your go-to on set snack…

An apple with almond butter. On those really long days it gives me the pick me up I need.

What’s always in your bag?

Bag Balm – I use it on my lips and cuticles.

Your go-to recipe for eating in…

I love whole meals in a bowl. I’ll pile brown rice, roasted vegetables and chicken into a bowl with some sort of delicious sauce, depending on my mood. Some days it’s tahini, some days it’s miso dressing, and other days it’s pesto!

What are some pre and post shoot routines for you?

Pre-shoot: Drilling lines! When I have to speak at Scandal pace, I am constantly warming up and running lines.

Post-shoot: Chilling. Usually on my couch with a bowl of air-popped popcorn (It’s not movie popcorn but it’ll do).

Favorite night of the week and why?

Sunday night. I always feel rested from the weekend and simultaneously excited for what the week will bring.

What’s a typical lunch on the Scandal set like?

Honestly…I usually crash in my trailer. Most days I try and bring a light lunch, eat it quickly, then power nap it up before it’s time to get back to OPA!

What’s always in your onset trailer fridge?

Fresh juices from Pressed Juicery or Glow.

What are your favorite Los Angeles restaurants?

AMMO. I used to waitress and run the catering department. It’s where I learned about farm-to-table food and I think its the best. I also love Bar Brix and Son of a Gun.

Are there vices you and your character Quinn both have? What are they?

Right now, I think that one of Quinn’s vices is her need to prove herself. She’s willing to go to whatever lengths, including torturing someone, to prove to Huck what she is capable of. I feel similar to that, because with all the talent going on in Scandal-land, I just want to hold up my end and keep up!

If you could host a dinner party with any five people, living or dead, who would be there?

Right now it would be Kerry Washington, Guillermo Diaz, Darby Stanchfield, and Columbus Short – a real Olivia Pope and Associates dinner. We STILL haven’t done that and it would be awesome! Right?!
